G'day. My names Matt, and I'm a student game developer trying to get myself through uni.
I've been designing games to some extend for as long as I can remember; I first started drawing levels for Secret Agent Sam after my cousin showed off his brand new computer complete with an abundance of shareware APOGEE games.
My main background is programming. Game developing is a fairly new(ish) field in Australia (or at least, New South Wales), so straight out of high school, I had to complete a Certificate IV in Programming before I could start a Diploma in Games Development, which in turn was required to attend university for a Bachelor in Games Development.
This took even longer than expected as the teachers at TAFE misjudged how long it would take to teach the course, and the head of games at university was too lazy to file the paperwork to acknowledge having been issued the required qualification at the start of the year, as opposed to the end of the previous year.
Mostly regretting the university approach, now. Most of the game side of things seems foreign to the teachers, and you are often left feeling like your teaching the teacher, but it is what it is. I'm learning a lot from personal practice, and trying to solve Unity-based questions here on GameDev.
I strive for quality, and have written game guides since I was 10. I've even won awards for them before. Hopefully I can contribute some high-quality response to Game.Dev, and help other users out with tough problems, or simple problems that arise when starting out.
